Anyone who currently opens Apple’s music app on an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Windows computer may be able to discover a new virtual radio station there: In the “Listen now” area, the so-called “Discovery Station” (“Music discover” station) on. This shows the direction in which Apple Music is now heading: More personalization and algorithmic music discovery.

Personalized and configured
The “Discovery Station” is explicitly marked with the label “For you”, so it is specially configured for each user. The difference to the user station in Apple Music (“Personal Station”), which has existed for a long time: Instead of feeding yourself from your own music library, the content here comes from the entire streaming offer – specifically tailored to discover new content that fit the taste learned from Apple.
The bands and artists that appear here are mainly those that are not currently available in your own music library. Sometimes, however, albums and songs by existing artists are also played as long as this content is not yet in the library. If you find something worthwhile, you can add the song or the formation right away. Likes (hearts) also seem to be included in the selection.
Dare more Spotify
Apple has so far been more cautious in dealing with personalization in Apple Music if you compare the group with its big competitor Spotify. Instead, Apple relies on an editorially maintained offer, but also provides its own playlist with new content from artists already in the music library. Furthermore, there are always “More of this” areas, which are based on the content currently being played.
The “Discovery Station” is so new that it cannot even be accessed via Siri. The offer has not yet been advertised. Previously, it was already possible to generate your own stations based on artists, genres or songs, but these were not specifically tailored to the user – as far as Apple is aware.
