Iván Espinosa de los Monteros leaves the first political line with the same forcefulness and elegance that has presided over his time in Congress, which he arrived at five years ago as one of the main figures of Vox and that today he abandons, renouncing to collect the deputy act who achieved at the polls on 23J. His departure opens a new crack in the party that he contributed to founding together with Santiago Abascal, to whom his destiny joined eleven years ago now in the Foundation for the Defense of the Spanish Nation (Denaes) after meeting him at a dinner when both were still militants in the PP.
There he learned that Abascal, then a councilor in Llodio (Álava), was testifying the next day at the National Court in a trial against Batasuna sympathizers without anyone from the PP accompanying him. “There are four of us,” the now leader of Vox explained to him then, among whom were two friends and Espinosa de los Monteros’s own father, the well-known businessman and high commissioner for Spain with Mariano Rajoy, Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros. Without thinking twice, he replied: “Well, there are already five of us.”
Belonging to a saga of soldiers, diplomats, politicians and businessmen and after eleven of his 50 years linked to Abascal’s career, he assures that he is leaving for personal reasons, a decision that coincides with the worst moment since Vox arrived at the institutions .
The formation adds to the loss of 19 seats in the elections, the definitive break a year ago of the party with Macarena Olona, who himself was in charge of announcing to journalists not without pain and with a blunt “this is the end of the road ». It also comes after the replacement of Javier Ortega Smith as general secretary, a position in which he succeeded Espinosa, and the exclusion from the lists of prominent deputies such as Víctor Sánchez del Real, also protagonists of Vox since its foundation, who, after learning of his resignation They have promised to continue “by his side”.
None of them now has weight in the party, like Rocío Monasterio, spokesperson in the Madrid Assembly, and Espinosa’s wife, with whom he has four children. Without wanting to make firewood from the fallen tree, but distributing it without regard, Espinosa has been one of the most applauded, followed and authorized voices of the party. He was one of the first to warn that the absolute majority of PP and Vox was not guaranteed and to stress that “Sanchismo and the PSOE are the same”, as other leaders have later repeated.
Endowed with great rhetoric, acquired from years of study in colleges and universities in Spain and the United States -he has dual nationality-, his ironic dialectical duels with the Minister of Economy, Nadia Calviño, in the government control sessions have been outstanding. .
He graduated in Economics and Business and his “mathematics for progressives” have hundreds of followers on social networks, where he usually criticizes the economic policy of the “socialists and communists”, who are, in his opinion, the “enemies of Spain” along with the “separatists and philoterrorists”. Her political action has been marked by his obsession with “serving Spain” and with fighting “progressive ideology” both inside and outside the country.
As Vox’s deputy secretary of International Relations, he has so far been responsible for managing the party’s relations with other political forces and foreign governments, thanks to his language skills – he is fluent in English and French and has knowledge of Polish and Italian -, as well as his business career abroad.
His resume includes positions of responsibility in auditing, venture capital management and real estate companies, such as Arthur Andersen, Schroders and Schroders Mckinsey, and as an entrepreneur he undertook different businesses in the textile and communication sectors, among others, and managed real estate investments in Madrid and Warsaw.
Neither today, on the day of his farewell, has Espinosa reproached Abascal or his now closest collaborators, Ignacio Garriga and Jorge Buxadé. The elegant and resounding he has said goodbye to Congress, not to the party, in which he will continue to be a member.
