A huge blue whale, considered the largest animal on Earth, washed up on a beach in southern Chile, probably after dying at sea, according to local authorities.

Residents of the city of Ancud, on the island of Chiloé, first saw the giant marine mammal on Saturday on a Pacific Ocean beach some 1,000 kilometers south of the capital Santiago.

The regional director of Sernapesca, Cristian Hudson, told local media that “given its condition, the whale must have died at sea some time ago and drifted in that state.”

Environmental groups said the area’s waters are heavily used by the fishing industry and shipping, and called for an investigation to determine if the creature was the victim of a collision.
