Police and the Ecuadorian Army found weapons, explosives and narcotics Friday in a raid on the Penitenciaría del Litoral, the most dangerous prison in the country. The officers found rifles, bombs, grenades, explosives, cash and drugs.
Air conditioners, fans, watches, televisions and other electronic items were also confiscated from the prisoners.
On Thursday, a search operation carried out by around 3,000 police and military personnel led to the discovery of weapons and ammunition, a pool with dozens of edible fish, chicken and duck farms, and 15 dogs inside part of the 12 pavilions.
This prison in the port city of Guayaquil was raided in response to a 60-day state of emergency declared in all prisons in the country.
Between July 22 and 23, the Penal del Litoral was the scene of clashes between inmates armed with rifles, machine guns, pistols and other weapons, including a grenade launcher.
The clashes left 31 dead and 14 wounded.
Almost two years ago, a brutal confrontation between prisoners from different wings left 119 dead in the same place.
