Augmented Reality seems to be a simple concept: Digital elements should enrich the physical world, for example with useful context information. However, the practical implementation is complex, even IT giants like Microsoft have practically failed so far: The Hololens ekes out a niche existence with an uncertain future. Apple is also aiming for augmented reality, even if the Vision Pro is based on classic VR glasses. It brings the physical environment captured by cameras to the displays in pass-through mode in front of the wearer’s eyes.

In episode 10, Leo Becker discusses with Wolfgang Stieler from MIT Technology Review why augmented reality is technically so difficult to implement. Among other things, this involves solutions to tangible optical problems such as the vergence-accommodation conflict, which can lead to discomfort when using headsets for a long time. The challenges of “Foveated Rendering” as well as eye and hand tracking are also a topic, Apple’s Vision Pro in particular relies on the latter for operation. We are also concerned with whether AI models will also give a boost to augmented reality, because computers are becoming better and better at capturing and classifying the physical environment and gestures of the headset wearer.

Mac & i Podcast on Apple Vision and visionOS

1984, 2007, 2024 – Apple Vision Pro follows in huge footsteps: Mac and iPhone not only made history, but also changed how, where and what we use computers for and how we operate them.

Mac & i accompanies the Apple Vision Pro as well as the opportunities and problems of “spatial computing” with a podcast: TNBT – The Next (Big) Thing highlights the latest developments relating to Apple’s new platform and the effects on the IT industry and society on a weekly basis.

TNBT can be found on all major podcast directories and can be listened to with Apple Podcasts and Spotify, or simply obtained as an RSS feed in your podcast app of choice. We look forward to questions, suggestions and criticism at [email protected].
