World Youth Day (WYD) in Lisbon 2023 had an unexpected protagonist in a religious who became a DJ to liven up the awakening of the million and a half young people gathered in Campo de la Gracia.
The man’s skill at the mixing desk quickly became viral and commented, raising opinions favorable and others contrary to this “modernization” of the Catholic Church, although the festive nature of the celebration has always been highlighted.
Guilherme Peixoto, which is the name of the DJ priest, said good morning to the pilgrims to the rhythm of techno. After starting with Hallelujah, he played Jerusalema and other songs, intertwined with phrases from Saint John Paul II and Pope Francis.
“I am responsible for waking up all these people and all this has been prepared to be a hymn of glory to God, that is how everything in our lives should be,” said the religious from the Archdiocese of Braga.
The priest, who turned 50 on July 31, left his usual work during these weeks to “work specifically” for the event, with the idea of ”transmitting a message of joy, of faith” so that “young people realize realize that they can dance, jump and be Christians,” he said.
Some young Spanish people present in Lisbon pointed out that the “session” started at about 7 in the morning.

Spanish bishops
The assessment of various Spanish bishops at the conclusion of the final mass of the World Youth Day (WYD) in Lisbon is the strength of their messages that have reached the hearts of those present.
For Monsignor Carlos Escribano, “the Pope has said many interesting things, within the brevity of his words. «He has not been prolific when it comes to making speeches, but he launches powerful ideas. The fact that there is room for everyone in the Church, and his great proposal to touch the hearts of many people who need to feel welcomed and loved”, he comments.
The prelate warns that “the Pope recalled that it is in love and on the cross that you find the strength of Jesus, and when you feel truly loved. «There are many young people who perceive this as a reality in their lives. Many. They need that love, that it manifests itself”, he assures.
Pope Francis expressed last Sunday, during the Angelus from Lisbon, his “great pain” for the “dear Ukraine” that “continues to suffer so much” from the war.
«In a particular way, we accompany with affection and prayer those who have not been able to come because of conflicts and wars. In the world there are many wars. Thinking of this continent, I feel great pain for the beloved Ukraine, which continues to suffer so much,” the Pontiff stressed.
