The Philippine military on Sunday condemned the “excessive and offensive” use of a water cannon by a Chinese coast guard ship.
The Philippine government has summoned the Chinese ambassador to protest an incident in which a Chinese coast guard vessel appeared to fire a water cannon at a Philippine vessel. The incident occurred in waters close to a sandbank claimed by both countries.
Philippine authorities claim that the Chinese action endangered its crew.
“The National Task Force on the West Philippine Sea, led by National Security Advisor Eduardo M. Ano, strongly condemns the aggressive, dangerous and illegal actions of the Chinese coast guard and Chinese maritime militia vessels against the ships of supply chartered by the Philippines and the Philippine Coast Guard vessels that were conducting a regular rotation and replenishment mission at Ayungin Shoal on Saturday, August 5, 2023,” said Jonathan Malaya of the Philippine National Security Council.
Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, a vital global trade route. He has ignored a 2016 international court ruling that his claim lacked legal basis.
