New accessories for the Apple Watch will only be equipped with Apple’s fast charging function in the future. According to a new report, the group will deliver the necessary modules as standard from October. The old charging component will be taken off the market and can no longer be installed in devices by participants in the official “Made for i” (MfI) program.

Apple is the only supplier that offers the charging puck modules officially required for the Apple Watch via its manufacturing partners, which the manufacturers can then install in their accessories – especially charging stations. So far, a standard charging module called C162 has been distributed to the accessory manufacturers if they do not specifically want to offer the quick charging function. The slow module is now replaced by default with the newer C962 Fast Charge variant, reports AppleInsider, citing the manufacturer.
The so-called fast charging of the Apple Watch has been available for the computer watch since the Series 7, which was released in 2021. Series 8 and Ultra from last September also master the technology. “Fast charging can go from 0 to 80 percent battery level on Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Series 7 in about 45 minutes. Apple Watch Ultra can go from 0 to 80 percent battery level in about an hour,” writes Apple to it. However, you also need a suitable power adapter, from Apple it has to be at least an 18-watt device with Power Delivery (USB-PD).
From October only new modules
According to AppleInsider, accessory manufacturers now have until August 31, 2023 to submit their product plans with the old charging module to Apple for approval. After that, installation is no longer possible. September 30, 2023 is again the last date to order the components at all. After that, all new accessory suppliers will be forced to use the updated C962 module. It is unclear how many of the old C162 modules will still be available – but manufacturers should think twice about installing the fast charging module right away.
Apple initially had trouble shipping the C962 to accessory vendors. Customers were therefore forced to either reach for Apple’s fast charging puck or wait and see. Sufficient quantities should now be available, which is reflected in Apple’s imminent compulsion to use the new module. For iPhone accessories as part of MfI, there will soon be a combination of Apple’s proprietary charging standard and Qi2 modules – they also promise faster charging.
