Julen Lopetegui leaves Wolverhampton Wanderers six days before the team’s debut in the 2023-24 Premier League against Manchester United. The English team has announced it in a statement, in which it affirms that both parties “have reached an agreement to separate” with which the career of the Spanish coach ends after nine months in the discipline of the club.

The coach did not agree with the transfer policy carried out by Wolves during this market, which had led him to consider leaving the club before the new season began. Something that, finally, has ended up happening.

Lopetegui arrived in November, after his dismissal as Sevilla coach, with the aim of lifting the team, which was sunk in decline. Not only did he succeed, but he managed to finish the last Premier in thirteenth position, seven points above the relegation places to the Championship.

The Wolves argue in their statement that the reasons for Lopetegui’s departure are due to “differences of opinion on certain issues”, which would have led the two parties to “terminate his contract amicably”, something that, on the other hand, , they understand as “the best solution” for both. Likewise, they point out that the conversations were fluid in recent weeks and that the coach’s intentions were known, “which gave the club time and space to start working on the search for a successor.”

The coach has wished “the best of luck for the future” to the club, in addition to thanking the “opportunity” provided. «It has been an honor to enjoy this adventure in the day-to-day company of Matt Hobbs, Matt Wild, the head of player services Lisa Hollis and all the club employees; whom I want to thank for their support and help at all times,” says Lopetegui.

The words of the sports director, Matt Hobbs, who expressed his gratitude to Lopetegui “for his dedication and hard work during his time at the club” are also included. “They were hired with the main goal of keeping the club in the Premier League last season, a goal they achieved with games to spare,” he concludes.
