iMessage: Apple submits thread preview

Apple has implemented a server-side improvement in its Messages app that affects Mac, iPhone, and iPad. In the future, you can send and receive iMessages that contain links to the new meta short message service Threads – and then read the content immediately without having to click. So far, the preview feature has only partially worked in the EU – profiles can be called up, but not individual postings. The reason for this is that Meta decided not to introduce threads in this country for regulatory reasons. The company filters by IPs.

competitors treated equally

With the new function, Apple treats X (formerly Twitter), Mastodon and now Threads equally – all three competing services receive the useful link previews in the news app. Apple had previously launched various offers on threads and well-known managers of the group such as Phil Schiller are already on the platform. The latter also pioneered Mastodon.

The implementation is probably not technically complex – Apple reads the corresponding meta tags and then displays the content. In order for this to work, however, the company had to make a whitelisting, which has now happened in the past few days.

Mastodon was on in February

Apple released the Mastodon Link previews last spring after years of being only available on Twitter. Interestingly, Apple now handles threads better than the much larger Facebook, which still doesn’t have a link preview. However, the advantage for the Meta subsidiary is that it generates more clicks in this way – without a preview, users tend to switch from the news app to the browser (or the Facebook app).

The link previews for threads are not completely complete. They break off after a certain number of characters. However, if available, images are also displayed as part of these “rich content previews”. Threads is considered a great success in the markets where it is already available. It is said to have grown faster than OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
