Daniel Sancho’s lawyer after the first night in prison: “He knows what he did, he wants to plan how to live in here”

Spanish chef Daniel Sancho has spent his first night in a prison on the Thai island of Samui after a judge ordered his immediate admission for the murder and dismemberment of 44-year-old Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta. His lawyer, Khun Anan, admitted this Tuesday upon his arrival in the jail where the Spaniard is located that he is “relaxed” and “knows what he did.” After his admission to provisional prison, the 29-year-old must remain in isolation due to covid sanitary protocol, although it is likely that the prison in which he is in Samui is not his final destination, but that he will be transferred to a prison in Bangkok, in the capital of Thailand, so that he can be assisted by the Spanish consular authorities.

“I think he’s relaxed. He knows what he did, I have explained the process to him (…) He wants to plan how to live in here”, Anan assured a group of journalists gathered at the gates of the prison where Sancho entered yesterday Monday after pleading guilty before a judge from the nearby island Koh Phangan of Arrieta’s murder. This is the first solo meeting between the Spaniard and Anan, hired by the family of Sancho, son of actor Rodolfo Sancho, since until yesterday he had been represented by legal counsel.

The lawyer stressed that the period of preventive detention, until the start of the trial, can last up to 84 days, according to the Efe agency. “There are many foreigners (in prison), you can find someone to talk to,” added the lawyer after holding the first meeting with his representative, which lasted about an hour and a half. Sancho and Arrieta had met at the beginning of last week on the Thai island of Koh Phagan, one of the most touristy in the country and known for hosting the so-called full moon party, in which the paradisiacal beaches of the island are filled with people to celebrate until the wee hours of the morning. But during the morning of Thursday, several local media published that a garbage collector had found a severed pelvis and intestines in a bag of fertilizers in a landfill on the island. The next day, on Friday, more remains were found in the same dump, such as parts of the lower extremities that belonged to Arrieta.

That same day, when being questioned by the police as a suspect, Sancho denied any type of involvement (he himself reported the disappearance of his companion on Friday). Predictably, the crime was committed on Tuesday night, when, according to his second version on Saturday, the Colombian surgeon would have gone to his hotel room to have sex. After a struggle, the young cook would have pushed Arrieta, who hit his head on the bathtub. So, Sancho decided to get rid of the body, dismembering it and spreading the pieces of the Colombian’s corpse in different places on the island, including the sea.

On Sunday, finally, Sancho acknowledged the facts in front of his Thai public defenders and several agents at the Koh Phangan police station. “I am guilty, but I was Edwin’s hostage. He held me hostage. It was a glass cage, but it was a cage. He made me destroy the relationship with my girlfriend, he has forced me to do things that he would never have done, ”he declared. The young Spaniard, who is accused of premeditated murder, concealment and theft of body parts to cover up the death or the cause of it, is in quarantine in the hospital area of ​​the prison awaiting the start of the trial.
