An unknown number of migrants began to be accommodated this Monday on a ship anchored off the coast of Dorset, in southern England, where the British government will keep some 500 asylum seekers, according to local media.

The first migrants – whose number has not been specified – are already on the three-story barge with 222 cabins, which bears the name of Bibby Stockholm, the media added.
The Executive of the United Kingdom is confident that this barge will reduce the bill it pays in hotels to accommodate new arrivals, although the measure has been criticized by humanitarian organizations and local entities in Dorset county.
According to the government’s plan, the boat will house asylum seekers for a period of eighteen months.
It is estimated that local authorities spend about six million pounds (6.96 million euros) a day to accommodate migrants who are in an irregular situation in hotels.
The director of the rights of migrants and refugees of the humanitarian organization Amnesty International (AI), Steve Valdez-Symonds, today criticized the measure, indicating that it is “a completely shameful way of sheltering people who have fled terror, the conflict and persecution.”
“Housing people on a floating barge is likely to cause trauma again,” he added.
