The judge enters Daniel Sancho in a Thai prison for the murder of surgeon Edwin Arrieta

A Thai judge has ordered the entry into prison of Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, accused of the murder and dismemberment of the Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta in Thailand, who this morning was transferred from the police station on the island of Phangan (southern Thailand) to the court of the nearby island of Samui. “I want to collaborate in everything,” Sancho told the Efe agency while he was taken to the private boat in which he is taken to court. The detainee’s family is still on a trip to Thailand, but has already hired a lawyer to replace the public defender who until now has been in charge of legal support for Sancho. At the moment, he has been admitted to the prison on the island of Samui, in the south of the country, where he will have to spend ten days in isolation due to sanitary protocol.

The 29-year-old left the police station with a police escort and hiding his hands under a red cloth, after remaining at the police station since he began to be questioned on Friday as a suspect in the murder and dismemberment of Colombian plastic surgeon Edwin Arrieta, to which he pleaded guilty on Saturday. The family of Sancho, who is the son of Spanish actor Rodolfo Sancho, has hired a private law firm to defend the young man, sources close to the case confirmed to Efe, although for the moment the Thai public defender continues to represent him. The family continues on a trip to the islands.

Arrieta’s corpse was dismembered and the first remains, the pelvis and a right leg, were found in the tourist resort of Koh Phangan on Thursday and Friday, respectively, according to the police report, which details that the limb was found in a landfill in the island. Police have confirmed that the head has also been recovered and that the remains of the body have been identified as belonging to Arrieta.

This Sunday, in a telephone interview already broadcast this Monday on Telecinco, Sancho assured that he was fine: “I am fine, they treat me very well. The police treat me very well.” At that time, the chef was having dinner “in the best hotel on the island” with the policemen who are guarding him and he stated that they allowed him to because he would soon be behind bars. “Tomorrow I am with 20 people in a cell,” he assured. “Why are you being so nice to me?” Sancho said, asking the agents. “Because you have helped us a lot, you have behaved well at all times,” he asserted that they have responded to him.

In a conversation with Efe on Sunday, Sancho pleaded guilty to the crime: “I am guilty, but I was Edwin’s hostage. He held me hostage. It was a glass cage, but it was a cage.” According to the police report, Sancho arrived in Koh Phangan on July 31 and on August 1 bought knives and black and green garbage bags from a shop on the island. He himself points out that Arrieta did not arrive on the island until Wednesday, August 2, and that Sancho went to pick him up (at the arrival point of the ferry from Samui) at 3:05 p.m. The two then went together to a bar near the Bougain hotel, where they stayed until 6:00 p.m., before going to another place afterwards. Sancho himself reported on Thursday night at the Koh Phangan police station the disappearance of his friend at dawn on August 3.

In his first statement to the police, Sancho assured that he had seen Arrieta for the first time on this trip on Wednesday, August 2, around three in the afternoon (10 in the morning in Spain), when he went to the Koh pier.
