In the run-up to the WWDC developer conference, Apple announced the finalists of this year’s Apple Design Awards. The award is considered a kind of App Oscar award and, according to the iPhone manufacturer, honors craftsmanship, creativity and technical know-how. The winners will be announced on Tuesday night, German time, at 3:30 a.m. Several apps from Germany and Austria are also on the shortlist.
A total of over 30 apps in six categories have been nominated, as can be read on an overview page from Apple. Apps are recognized in the categories of inclusivity, enjoyment and fun, interaction, social impact, visuals and graphics, and innovation.
Apps from Germany
From Germany, the apps Finding Hannah and Riveo are among the finalists. Finding Hannah is the first game by the Berlin development studio Fein Games. The game tells the story of a family and a drama of three women. The game was nominated in the inclusivity category.
Also from Berlin is the company Forge and Form, which developed the video effects app Riveo. The AI-supported tool should make it easy to create professional effects. Riveo is among the finalists in the Visuals and Graphics category.
The language learning app Duolingo also has connections to Germany and is among the finalists in two categories: pleasure and fun as well as social impact. The company has its own office in Berlin.

App developer Klemens Strasser from Austria is among the finalists in the Inclusivity category with his Ancient Board Game Collection. The nine different games are each designed by people from the home country of the game. Strasser explained on Twitterthat he was “more than thrilled” to be nominated again. He was already one of the finalists in 2022. In 2015 he won the award, back then with the quiz Elementary Minute.
Among the finalists are insider tips and apps that are already known to a larger circle of people. The latter include the Flighty app, with which flights can be tracked – the app also offers to display this as a live activity on the home screen. The game Stitch, a kind of painting by numbers, can be found in Apple’s Arcade game subscription service.
