The messaging service Telegram has introduced its recently announced payment model. With “Telegram Premium” users get subscription features like faster downloads and twice as large file uploads for $4.99 per month. At the same time, Telegram emphasizes that none of the previous functions will be restricted. However, Telegram Premium is not yet available for users from Germany.
As Telegram announced in its own blog, premium users can now upload files to the Telegram cloud that are up to 4 GB instead of the usual 2 GB. As a paying subscriber, you can follow up to 1000 channels (default: 500) and save 400 instead of the usual 200 GIFs. Premium users can also display voice messages in text form, get a range of exclusive stickers and emoji reactions, and animated profile pictures.
Telegram premium without ads
The profile text may also be longer for premium users and contain a link. In some countries, sponsored messages appear in large, public channels to help fund Telegram. These are no longer displayed to premium subscribers.
Telegram promises that even standard users can download the larger files and see the premium stickers, reactions, and profile pictures. Non-paying users just can’t use it themselves. At the same time, Telegram introduced a number of new features for everyone. These include verification badges in chats to identify verified sources, and an improved chat preview on Android smartphones that shows the chat without marking it as read – analogous to the iOS version.
Telegram popular in app stores
Telegram founder Pawel Durow had already assured when announcing the payment service that all existing functions would remain free and many new free features would be added. Even users who have not subscribed to the premium version prepared since the end of 2020 should be able to enjoy some benefits such as extra-large documents, media and stickers sent by premium users.
According to the statistics service Statista, Telegram is one of the five most downloaded Android apps this year, alongside Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and Subway Surfers. According to Forbes, Messenger is ranked 6th for downloads of iOS apps. As a result, Telegram says it has exceeded 700 million monthly active users.
