New standard for Bluetooth helmet communication Open Bluetooth Intercom by Cardo, Midland, Uclear
The brand-independent Bluetooth protocol Open Bluetooth Intercom from Cardo, Midland and Uclear is intended to make it easier to network communication-capable motorcycle helmets.
Communication systems integrated into the motorcycle helmet are enjoying great and growing popularity. In the past, the systems from different manufacturers could not be connected to one another, or only with difficulty. The systems are now more open and networking works better. However, networking usually goes hand in hand with limited system-immanent and parallel functions such as listening to music and, under certain circumstances, with poor voice quality from brand to brand. To optimize things, the manufacturers Cardo, Midland and Uclear have developed a new Bluetooth standard together.
Open Bluetooth Intercom
The new protocol is already available in Cardo’s Spirit, Freecom X and Packtalk systems. Open Bluetooth Intercom (OBI) enables easy, cross-brand connection of communication systems without interfering with other functions such as media, navigation or telephony. From a technical point of view, the OBI standard includes various extensions of the Bluetooth “Handsfree Profile”, which enables direct duplex communication between Bluetooth-enabled devices.
