However, the day after said celebration, this saint is commemorated and that is why some communities have marked the day as a holiday on their calendar. So let’s find out below, In which communities is this San Juan 2022 a holiday.

San Juan is a party in these Communities

The night of June 23 to 24 will be celebrated San Juana night full of traditions, rituals and bonfires that serve to celebrate the arrival of summer. But this is also a festivity in honor of Saint John the Baptist and therefore June 24, 2022 is a holiday in some communities and provinces.

Even though the night of San Juan is celebrated in a special way in many citiesthe truth is the public holiday of June 24 is celebrated as such only in two communities: Catalonia and the Valencian Community. To which this 2022 is added a third that is Galicia.

Thus, only these three communities will live the night of San Juan in stylewith beach parties, festivals and culinary traditions such as the coke from san juan that is eaten throughout Catalonia and Levante, to be able to rest the next day, Saturday.

In the rest of Spain it will be just a business day, despite the fact that San Juan is also celebrated in style on the night of June 23 in communities such as Madrid or Canary Islands.

Galicia celebrates San Juan 2022

As we have already pointed out, Galicia has decided to celebrate this 2022 San Juan. Something that he had not done since 2019 since he chooses to celebrate this regional holiday based on the days on which others from the community itself fall, such as the Day of Galician Letters. In this way, on June 24, the Galicians, like Catalans and Valencians, will have a holiday and will be able to celebrate a three-day bridge.

Anyway, we can’t forget that the night of San Juan in Galicia, and especially in A Coruña, is lived in the most special way of all. In fact, it is in this city that many events related to this night and highlights a gigantic bonfire to celebrate the arrival of summer.

In fact, during May, the celebration of events that have to do with this festival begins and throughout June there are events such as chamber music concerts, recitals, exhibitions, ballet and regional dances until reaching the June 23, night in which there are processions and parades of parades, full of music groups, bagpipes and traditional dances, without forgetting the groups of interpreters and the processional giants known as big heads, which fill the streets of A Coruña with color, joy and celebration. The Plaza de María Pita hosts a music festival, and you can not miss the grilled sardines since in each neighborhood a “sardinada” is celebrated.

As the night progresses hundreds of bonfires are lit, although the Riazor and Orzán beaches are where the party is most spectacular. At midnight, the colors of the fire are reflected in the Atlantic Ocean: the so-called “noite da queima” (the night of the burning) reaches its peak, and a gigantic bonfire that takes two days to form begins to burn. It is very common to see many people practicing the purifying ritual of immersing themselves in the sea on Riazor beach. The sky lights up with fireworks and the party moves to the streets of A Coruña, where it continues until the next morning.

Why do we celebrate San Juan?

There are actually two celebrations that commemorate Saint John since, on the one hand, this It is the festival that celebrates the birth (June 24) of Saint John the Baptist but also this is also the party that welcomes summer (hence the night of San Juan with its celebration around the bonfires since fire is related to the sun).

A tradition that for many It also marks the beginning of the school holidays. Hence, among other things, students take advantage of the bonfires on the beaches to burn their course books or their notes, despite the fact that the great tradition around the bonfires on the night of San Juan is to jump over them to attract good luck, as well as bathing in the sea bathed in moonlight.

San Juan is also a popular festival in many other places in the world as is the case, for example, Latin America, as well as in France, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Finland or the United Kingdom.
